Tisovitsa Nature Reserve

If you’re planning to spend your summer holiday along Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast, you’ve made a great choice. More and more travelers are turning away from the large, commercial resorts like Sunny Beach in favor of quieter, more peaceful destinations that offer charm without the crowds.

One such gem is the village of Lozenets, which has grown in popularity in recent years. Visitors often return year after year, drawn by the relaxed atmosphere and the excellent accommodations the village offers. (We even have a great place to recommend—check the link here.) Now let’s dive into a suggestion for a nature-filled day trip during your stay in Lozenets.

Just 14 kilometers from Lozenets, nestled in the Strandzha Mountains, lies the Tisovitsa Reserve—one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas in the region. Close by is the village of Bulgari, where you can witness the authentic ancient ritual of Nestinarstvo (fire dancing), traditionally performed on the feast day of Saints Constantine and Helena.

The Tisovitsa River, which flows through the reserve and shares its name, creates ideal conditions for a rich variety of plant and animal life. The area has been under protection since 1990, and visitors are only allowed to explore it along designated paths and with an official guide or inspector.

As with many protected areas, Tisovitsa is home to rare and unique species of flora and fauna, many of which are endangered or endemic. In addition to its natural wonders, the reserve is dotted with historic landmarks such as Mǎrzevsko Kale, Pisan Kamak, and Kaldǎrǎmǎt. These locations contain fascinating archaeological remains, some dating back to the Thracian period, and have been excavated and studied by historians and researchers.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a history enthusiast, or simply seeking a tranquil escape from the beach, a trip to Tisovitsa offers a truly enriching experience.
