Kapana – Plovdiv’s creative district

Plovdiv is known as the city beneath the hills, famous for its rich history and cultural heritage. One area that truly stands out with its unique spirit and inspiring atmosphere is Kapana. If you choose to stay overnight in the city center, don’t miss visiting this vibrant district. It charms visitors with its beautiful architecture, lively cafés and bars, and its laid-back “aylyak” vibe – a local word for taking life slow and enjoying it.

You may wonder why it’s called “Kapana” (meaning “The Trap”). The narrow, winding streets are part of the answer – they form a sort of maze where you might feel like you’ve passed the same corner twice. But what you’ll definitely find here is a cozy ambiance, delicious food, and friendly locals ready to guide you.

During the Middle Ages, most Bulgarian towns had trade and craft areas. In Plovdiv, this was Kapana. The narrow streets then were bustling with life, just as they are today—especially in the evenings. Back then, the district was known as Buyuk Kapana or “The Great Trap,” and by 1652, it housed an impressive 880 workshops and shops. Unfortunately, a devastating fire in 1906 destroyed many of them.

Today, Kapana blends modern creativity with historical charm. The streets lead you to art galleries, workshops, design studios, cafés, and restaurants. Many street names reflect the old trades that once dominated the area, such as Zlatarska (Goldsmith), Zhelezarska (Blacksmith), and Kozhuharska (Furrier).

Art and creativity are at the heart of Kapana. Its walls are transformed into canvases for vibrant street art. You’ll find small shops selling handcrafted items – from unique clothing and accessories to home décor.

Kapana is also a feast for the senses, thanks to its wide variety of cafés and restaurants. Traditional Bulgarian dishes with a modern twist, as well as European cuisine, are part of the diverse menus. Or you can simply enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee to start your day right.

If you’re short on time but still want to get a feel for Plovdiv, a visit to Kapana is more than enough. This charming district truly is the beating heart of the city beneath the hills – colorful, lively, and full of character.
